Unlock the mysteries of your family’s military memorabilia
Bring your family heirlooms to the York Army Museum on 12th August.
Promotional Feature
Many of us have a collection of old medals and military memorabilia handed down to us through the generations, but how much do you really know about these items?
This August you can unlock the mystery of your heirlooms for free thanks to the York Army Museum. They’re holding a Military Memorabilia Roadshow on Saturday 12th August, to which you can bring along your items to show a wide range of experts who will provide free insights and background information on them.
Hannah Rogers, the Collections Manager at the museum says…
We want people to bring in documents, photographs, medals, parts of uniform that they have from relatives who have served in the British Army so we can tell them more about them. We really want to share those special stories about the people who have fought with the army.
The only restriction is that if you have any old weapons, you're asked to bring a photo rather than the weapon itself!
Family Tree Research
If you’re researching your family tree, this could also be a great way to find out more about your ancestors, with free information provided, including from representatives of the Explore York Archives. Hannah says…
If you’ve got any general questions about the army or local regiments or you know that one of your relatives served in the British Army and you want to know where to go to find more information, come along and we’ll be able to help you out.
There’s plenty more to see and do during the day. The event will be welcoming York Normandy veterans who will be talking about their experiences. So if you have been inspired by the Dunkirk film, this is a chance to hear stories first hand from those who experienced some of the most dramatic events of the Second World War.
Free Museum Entry
Throughout the day the York Army Museum will be open to the public for free, allowing you to see some of the UK’s most important regimental collections, spanning over 300 years of global history. The modern interior of the museum boasts rare artefacts and everyday objects providing extraordinary stories from 1685 to the present day. So if you’ve never been inside, this is a great chance for you to explore this unique attraction.
