If you love getting out, stretching your legs and enjoying some stunning views, Market Weighton has it all on your doorstep. The town is situated at the foot of the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds, famed for its delightful rolling countryside.

The Wolds Way National Trail which runs from Hessle on the Humber Estuary to Filey on the Yorkshire Coast runs through the town and across the Wolds making it ideal if you love a good country walk. There's also the Hudson Way Rail Trail following the path of the old Market Weighton to Beverley railway line.

If you prefer to get about on two wheels, the popular Transpennine Route 66 Cycle trail also passes through the town making it a great location for keen cyclists.

 

 

3. It's a picturesque town

Market Weighton has a wonderful, traditional feel to the town centre, boasting some impressive Norman, Georgian and Victorian buildings, with the beautiful church tower of All Saints Church overlooking the town centre.

There's a great sense of local pride here too, with everywhere well looked after – in the summer months there are flowers everywhere you go around the town making it a lovely place for a relaxing wander around.

 

 

4. It's the home of Giant Bradley

Born in 1878 in Market Weighton, William Bradley is the tallest man British man ever to have been recorded, at a whopping height of 7ft 8in!

His life-size statue stands overlooking the town centre at the junction of Holme Road and the High Street.

8. England's oldest annual horse race takes place here

If you're looking for a sporting event with a difference, you can't beat the Kiplingcotes Derby, held in the countryside near Market Weighton. It's widely accepted to be the oldest annual horse race in England, having started in 1519.

It's not run on a traditional racecourse, but instead follows a four-mile route across the local countryside between the hamlet of Kiplingcotes and the village of Londesborough.

Sadly 2018's race had to be cancelled due to a waterlogged course, but the event should be back in Spring 2019 for the 499th running of this historic race.

 

 

9. Market Weighton is a growing town and community
