As they take to the field at Wembley on Sunday afternoon, York City will look end a disappointing season with some positivity. They' will be battling it out with Macclesfield Town for the chance to lift the FA Trophy.
York, who were relegated from the National League this season, have enjoyed success in the competition as recently as 2012, during current manager Gary Mills' first stint at the club.
The mood among the York faithful is likely to be less jubilant tomorrow, the win in 2012 came a week before a play-off final that saw the Minstermen promoted to League Two. Now, with the prospect of life in the National League North next season, a day out at Wembley offers a short-term escape from the woes of relegation.
Their have been some positives since the end of the season, however, Mills has agreed to stay on as manager and has already signed top scorer Jon Parkin up for another campaign. In his press conference earlier this week he suggested more will follow Parkin's example, with "90% of the players expressing that they want to be back here next season".
Furthermore, some would have York as favourites to lift the trophy on Sunday, despite relegation. They beat Macclesfield both times they met in the league this season, the last victory a resounding 3-1 away win for the Minstermen.
"No fans deserve a smile on their faces more than our fans" said Mills, and while a win in the Trophy final wouldn't cure the pain of relegation, it would at least give the City faithful a well-deserved reminder of what success feels like.
