Northallerton honours Olympians with "Olymic Square"

The Town square has been renamed in honour of the district's Olympians and Paralympians.

Northallerton town square has been renamed to "Olympic Square" in honour of the district’s Olympians and Paralympians.

The renaming marks the achievements of Hambleton's medal winning athletes with plaques commemorating their successes.

Council Leader, Councillor Mark Robson said

The achievements of our local athletes over the last two games have made us all proud to live in Hambleton. Laurence, Kat and Nicola are a testament to hard work and determination. They are already inspiring a new generation of young athletes just starting out on their sporting journeys – and I know they are all training very hard for their next competitions.

Para-rower Laurence Whitleley, who won gold in Rio, and Nicola Wilson, who took silver in equestrian team eventing in 2012, were at the renaming event and unveiled their respective plaques.

There is also a plaque for Kat Copeland who took gold in 2012 for rowing, with the District Council planning to mark future successes by inserting new plaques into the pavement of the square.
