First Million pound race at York attracts high class of entries

The first million pound race at York, the Juddmonte International has attracted a high class set of entries.
Among the forty- two possible contestants there are some sixteen that have already won at Group One level. Between them they share an impressive thirty such titles.
Run on Wednesday 23 August, York's feature race often heralds a clash between the generations and the Epsom Derby victor, the three year old Wings of Eagles, could yet take on Highland Reel the winner of the King George VI Stakes as an older horse.
This pair are among the fifteen entered by County Tipperary based, Aidan O'Brien and so form part of a seventeen strong Irish contingent.
The race which was independently ranked as Britain's Best contest last season also often sees a challenge between the genders. Dual 1,000 Guineas heroine, Winter, or Breeders Cup Star, Queen’s Trust are eye catching female entrants.
A French contender, ranked as the best horse in Europe last season, is Almanzor.
After a strong Royal Ascot for Godolphin, their famous blue silks could be carried by Berkshire winner Benbatl or the Coral Eclipse hero, Hawkbill.
The premier race solely fillies and mares at York is the Darley Yorkshire Oaks, appropriately run on Ladies Day, Thursday 24 August.
Thirty-one horses have entered at this stage, including Winter and Enable, who have shared the three Classics for fillies this year. Defending champion, Seventh Heaven is part of another strong party from Aidan O'Brien's operation.
Queen's Trust from Sir Michael Stoute's Newmarket stable is amongst those entered in both the middle distance contests.
A European flavour is added by entrants from France and Germany.
The headline international entrant comes in the fastest race of the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival, the Coolmore Nunthorpe. The American trained, Lady Aurelia, provided a memorable minute at Royal Ascot when capturing the King's Stand Stakes and trainer Wesley Ward was nearly as quick as his filly in nominating York as her next stop.
There is quality amongst her potential opponents; fellow Group One victor at the Royal Meeting, Caravaggio, being a prime example.
The Betfred Dante winner, Permian, carries the hopes of Yorkshire Racing in the Juddmonte International being based at Middleham with Mark Johnston. The strongest hand for the home county looks to lie in Friday's top race, as nine Yorkshire trained sprinters are entered.
