York City manager Gary Mills says he is happy that the squad are fully prepared for their opening match of the season against AFC Telford United.
The Minstermen kick-off at home at 3pm on Saturday as they begin life in the National League North.
Speaking to Minster FM, Mills said the mood within the group was a good one:
“I’m positive, the players are positive, they’re ready for it now. A few players have made comments in the local press about [how] they want to put things right. I’ve said myself, they’re here so credit to them for being here because they want to do that.
The fans have shown what they want to do this season and what they want and what they expect, so we’ve got to go and do that.”
Mills added that he was confident that the squad had learned from their mistakes in preseason:
“You always have to get the basics right. We conceded two goals against Notts County because the basics weren’t right, simple things like that. That’s why we do preseason, because we conceded two goals that we don’t want to go and concede on Saturday. I’d rather concede them against Nott’s County than against Telford. We’ve talk about the goals we conceded and fingers crossed it doesn’t happen again.”
Whilst Mills and his squad are looking forward to getting the season started, he was keen to remain cautious ahead of the big kick-off:
“You have to be totally focused on your job and the players have to be totally focused on Telford on Saturday and they all have to know their jobs. That’s all we’re concentrating on, we’ll leave the rest of it to ourselves as to what we’re thinking and what we want to do. Me personally I’ve got my goals this season, I know what I want to achieve. I know where I want to take this football club, but there’s times for that to come out.”
