Acomb Travel talks about accessible holidays with Enable Holidays.
It is important to identify what type of holiday our disabled customer is looking for and to establish his/ her specific needs at the outset.
This involves taking the time to get to know as much about our customer as possible – including understanding their disability and circumstances. If they have a specific destination in mind it’s always an advantage to tell them a little about the place and the facilities available for people with limited mobility. We will need to know a lot of details especially regarding facilities in the adapted room, accessibility throughout the accommodation, and the level of accessibility in and around the resort itself.
If, on the other hand, our customer has no particular destination in mind, it’s always a good idea to find out the maximum flight duration they’d be comfortable with before suggesting a few ideas. There are also fabulous options for non-flyers.
We ensure we ask what facilities/services are required for all elements of the holiday starting with the airport. Is full assistance required? Can the steps be managed? Will you be taking your own wheelchair? Is it manual or electric? We will obtain the measurements and weight (as this will influence the choice of airline) Will you be taking other medical aids or medication?
Once in resort can our customers transfer to a standard transfer vehicle? If not will they need an adapted vehicle as not all destinations can provide this type of transportation – all essential information we will require prior to confirming any reservation.
We need to establish the full requirements within the accommodation. Is a fully adapted bathroom with a flat floor shower required? If so, this has to be guaranteed at the time the booking is made as it is too important to be a request. Does the bathroom need to have grab rails? Is there a shower chair? Is there full access round the hotel? The list goes on. Equipment hire is available in many resorts but again we need to establish the exact requirements at the time of booking.
Above all else, it is essential to gain the best possible understanding of our customers’ needs from the outset and use that information to plan a holiday to suit the individual. The more information that we can gather, the better understanding we have.
Enable Holidays which we sell are an award-winning brand for accessible travel with a range of more than 500 disabled-friendly holidays, Enable Holidays is the preferred choice for disabled holidaymakers and we are very proud to be selling Enable Holidays.
The real advantage of using a specialist like Enable is having one point of contact with all the skills and experience needed to arrange everything from airport assistance, adapted transfers and guaranteed adapted rooms through to accessible tours and once-in-a-lifetime experiences – all tailor-made to meet the disabled customer’s individual requirements.
A holiday is a special occasion for anyone, but for wheelchair-users and people with limited mobility there are so many things to think about to ensure the holiday is one you will remember for all the right reasons.
At Acomb Travel we want to ‘Enable’ you to enjoy more of the world!!!!!!!
DO YOU HAVE A BUCKET LIST??
ERIC SHARES HIS EXPERIENCE OF HIS ADVENTURE TO EVEREST BASE CAMP
I do not spend as much time in the travel agency now as I have taken somewhat of a ‘back seat’ but occasionally I help out when I cover for holidays etc. It was one such day back in March when I was in the agency and took some time to look at various new programmes. I was fanning through the G Adventures brochure when in an instant one particular adventure struck an immediate chord – trekking to Everest Base Camp!!! As a young boy I had read quite a few books on the first conquering of Everest and it had always held a fascination for me.
The seed was known and I knew just the person who would accompany me, my good friend John, a real outdoor activity enthusiast. We got full encouragement from Sam and Sue our respective wives so that was it, we were going!!
Fast forward to October 5th and our arrival in to Kathmandu. We spent a couple of nights pre-tour and then joined our group of 14 for an evening meal. Five different nationalities formed our group as well as our Nepalese guide, Gelu.
It was a pleasure to be with some lovely people and it promised to be a very enjoyable time together. Kathmandu airport is undergoing repair work to runways at present due to the earthquake 4 years ago so we had to transfer to Raamechhap some four to five hours away. This was quite a drive along mountain roads which twisted and winded and often there were no barriers in place so the thought of going over the edge and rolling hundreds and hundreds of feet was quickly dismissed!!
From Ramechhap we took the 25 minute flight to Lukla where by now we were at an elevation of over 9000 feet.
After a short break for drinks our trek began immediately and the destination was Phakding some 4 hours away. Within minutes the scenery was stunning as we followed the river amongst thick vegetation with high peaks towering above us. It was quite surreal having left the bustle of Kathmandu and here there is not a vehicle to be seen, only mules, cattle and eventually as we got higher, Yak. Slow and steady was instilled in us from the first minute and this advice is not to be ignored if you wish to achieve your goal of reaching base camp. At times you felt you were walking in slow motion and even if you did then it was certainly the correct way to approach this challenge.
Phakding was reached by late afternoon and our first overnight stop. We were not disappointed with the accommodation. The description was 100% correct. Extremely basic, in fact it was like sleeping in a plywood box but we had been warned!!
The following day, having crossed four rope bridges and seeing our first view of Mount Konde ( 20299 feet ) we arrived in Namche Bazar, the largest village in this region at a height of 11286 feet.
Two nights were spent here to help our acclimatisation. It was on the following morning that we were presented with our first view of Mount Everest and it was a sight to behold. It did not feel real somehow but by now the altitude was telling otherwise.
Over the next few days we continued to climb steadily but by now some of the group were suffering. Headaches were the problem and although I was suffering a little, I was aware that other people were finding the altitude quite a struggle. However, they were a determined bunch of people and had only one objective in mind.
By Monday 14th October we were at an altitude of over 16000 feet. We had left the tree line behind and were now having to wear our coats during trekking. Our accommodation this night was in Lobuche but prior to turning in for bed which was usually very early our guide, Gelu, took us on a short walk to climb a nearby ridge. On reaching the top of the ridge the sight which stood before us was nothing short of incredible – the Khumbu Glacier which stretches for 9 kilometres. Photographs would not do justice to the enormity of this natural phenomenon.
Tuesday 15th October, the day we would reach base camp. Sadly, Reime, one of the Dutch ladies had to return to a lower altitude so thirteen of us plus Gelu set off at 7.30. By 10.45 we had climbed to over 17000 feet and had an early lunch of carbs, carbs and more carbs. It was another two hours of walking over rough, boulder strewn terrain but by 1.30 we had made it and believe you me we all shed tears and hugged each other profusely. Time does not allow you to spend more than one hour there so after numerous photographs we began our walk back down to Gorakshep. I was exhausted and for the latter part of the journey I was stumbling over rocks barely focusing on where to place my feet.
It is the hardest thing I have ever done and I have run a marathon but the mental and physical demands this adventure puts upon you will challenge every resource you think you have.
Thank heavens for Honey, Lemon and Ginger – apart from 4 litres of water a day this drink
kept us all going!!!!
