Sam Collins has left his role as manager of York City Football Club with immediate effect.

Sporting Director Dave Penney will oversee training until a new manager is appointed.

A very brief statement on the website says:

The club's board would like to thank Sam for his hard work and professionalism.

Reaction on Social Media

Poisoned challis. He stood no chance poor guy. The club has lost it for me now, I’ve been patient but now I give up. You can’t keep changing managers - when will you ever learn. 100% do not blame Sam and am gutted for him 😔#ycfc

...the players are the main fault and just a shame we can’t get rid of players as quickly we do with managers

— georgegregory (@George_ycfc) January 5, 2019

So we now have no manager, 5 loan players on their way back and we are left with Newton, Moke, Law and co! 😭😭😭 Stockport and Chorley up next. You would be mental to take this job!

He did his best and we must respect him for that but when you have a poor hand you will never win a game of cards , all the best for the future for you the nightmare is over

Background

Sam Collins expressed his delight after being appointed manager of York City on a permanent basis in October.

Collins joined the club as youth team manager in the summer of last year and took over as interim manager on August 20.

"I am absolutely delighted,"

Collins said in a statement to Minster FM at the time.

"It is an opportunity to take this club forward and try to improve everything further.

A move into football management has been my ambition for a long time. I have served my apprenticeship, I have done my homework, and the time is right now to give it a real good go.

I have always had plans for what I would do if I got the job on a permanent basis and now we can start to put those plans in place,"

Collins' first game in permanent charge was away at Southport.

Poor form has seen York City languishing in 15th place, half way between the relegation zone and the play-off places.

The 1-0 loss to Curzon Ashton – who hadn’t previously kept a clean sheet at home – was clearly the last straw.
