York Minster is one of Britain's most famous and breathtaking buildings, with a history spanning almost 1,000 years.

But when did you last actually visit the Minster?

We all know it's easy to take places on our doorstep for granted, but the team there are currently encouraging local people to rediscover this jewel in Yorkshire's crown.

So how much do you know about what is on offer behind its doors? Maybe it’s time for another visit...

1. York Minster is free for all York residents… always!

Simply pop in with proof of address or a valid York Card, and explore as much as you want. Children under 16 are free too, so if you need an escape from the crowds, or simply have been caught in the rain, the Minster is ready to welcome you.

2. The only cathedral in the UK with an accredited museum

Revealing York Minster Museum in the Undercroft

The Minster can take you on a journey back 2,000 years. Based in the Undercroft, the interactive museum houses Roman ruins, Viking artefacts, and rarely seen treasures.

3. The Central Tower is at the highest point in York

The tower gives unparalleled views across the historic city centre and for miles beyond. Take the Minster's Tower Challenge, climbing the 275 steps to the top, and treat yourself a badge to celebrate your achievement. Available to everyone aged 8+, this is an additional £5; perfect for showing off your city.

4. You can wind down at the end of the day with the Minster choir at Evensong

Continuing a celebration of music that has existed at the Minster for centuries, this beautiful, atmospheric service is open to everyone, and will transport you to a place of peace and tranquility. The choir includes 52 boys and girls from the Minster School who sing daily during term time, with visiting choirs standing in during the holidays.

5. York Minster has the biggest collection of medieval stained glass in the country

The Minster houses some of the world’s greatest examples of this art. Stories are woven throughout each window, and stained glass tours run every day at 1.30pm to bring these to life.
