The search has been launched to find York’s top dog(s) to play a key role in York Light’s production of Lionel Bart’s Oliver! next year.
The company, which is staging the classic musical in February, is looking for a key member of the cast – a bull terrier to play Bill Syke’s canine companion Bullseye.
Sykes is a vicious robber and murderer working with Fagin and his gang of young tearaways in Victorian London.
His bull terrier dog Bullseye is always by his side.
In Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist, on which the musical is based, Bullseye is described as having a distinctive black patch round one eye.
York Light producers are hoping to find a dog with identical markings. If not, a spot of black make-up may be needed.
Auditions with would-be canine performers are being held on Saturday November 30.
Jonny Holbek, who is playing Bill Sykes in the production, will be on hand to help judge the hopefuls.
The successful dog or dogs will need to be available for rehearsals in January and February before performances on stage at York Theatre Royal from 12 to 22 February.
