York Outer MP Julian Sturdy and Strensall ward Conservative Councillor Paul Doughty, who Chairs the City’s Health Scrutiny Committee, have welcomed the news that Foss Park.
It's the city’s new state-of-the-art mental health hospital on Haxby Road and it has opened its doors today (Tuesday 21st April) - and a week ahead of the building schedule.
Councillor Doughty said,
“The story of mental health services in York has not always been a good one.
The well documented problems at Bootham Park Hospital and loss of local provision was devastating for many residents at the time and I know the uncertainty over services caused considerable problems and anxiety for many people.
The opening of this new facility however, marks a new and positive start for inpatient services in York.
The Health Trust, TEWV, who took over the majority of mental health services in York, together with their building partner Wates Construction, have done a remarkable job keeping the build to schedule and I’m sure the new hospital will make a huge difference for those who need specialist inpatient mental health support and dementia care.”
Julian Sturdy MP added
“I am glad that local residents now have the security of knowing that if they or anyone in their family develops mental health issues, they can be treated in a dedicated, brand-new facility close to home.
It is reassuring that the mental health provision previously available at Bootham Park has been replaced in full, and enhanced.
The new facilities include 72 inpatient bedrooms with en-suite facilities across four wards, two adult and two for older people, in a pleasant, landscaped environment.
I understand transfer of inpatients from temporary facility Peppermill Court and other locations will commence in a phased approach.
I very much look forward to visiting the new site myself as soon as normal conditions resume.”
