All of Parliament - the House of Commons as well as the House of Lords - could be relocated to York under plans outlined by the Prime Minister.
Boris Johnson has sent a letter to MPs saying that locations outside London should be considered while the Palace of Westminster undergoes at £6b restoration.
The Prime Minister wrote:
“Costs should be kept to a minimum (ie no gold plating).
We should also move as quickly as possible.
However, the review should also consider a possible location outside London.
The Government is considering establishing a Government hub in York and it would therefore make sense to consider this as a potential location.
We should also move as quickly as possible, both because of the risks associated with the current state of the building and the need to provide certainty on the way forward and thereby minimise disruption to our business.”
Just two days ago peers discussed a potentially more permanent move to York for the House of Lords - prompting one peer to suggest that York was akin to Outer Mongolia to the general public - suggesting it was too remote for Lords to live and work.
