A teenage girl has appeared at Leeds Crown Court charged with the murder of seven-year-old Katie Rough. The 15-year-old, who appeared via video link, did not speak during the short hearing. No application for bail was made and she was remanded to a youth detention centre.
She will next appear via video link at Leeds Crown Court for a pre-trial hearing on 16th February.
She can not be named by the media or people on social media because the law protects her identity.
The girl was arrested after Katie was found in a field in York on Monday, with what was described in court as severe cuts to her neck and chest.
The youngster, described as a "kind and thoughtful child", was taken to York District Hospital but died a short time later.
A card left at the scene where she was found, signed by "nana and grandad", read: "Night, night my darling princess Katie."
Thousands of pounds have been raised in an appeal for donations.
The Rough family have thanked the appeal's organisers, saying the "generosity of strangers is overwhelming".
Police say they have had a positive response from the appeal for information following Katie's death. All calls are being followed up and officers thanked the public for providing information.
They have conducted a search of a path through woods off Acomb Wood Drive.
House to house enquiries continue too.
