'Stable' May gag tops Christmas joke poll

It may not have secured a Commons majority, but Theresa May's favourite election slogan has inspired the winner of a contest to write the best modern Christmas Cracker gag.

In this year's edition of the annual competition run by TV channel Gold, the best line was voted to be: "Why was Theresa May sacked as nativity manager? She couldn't run a stable government."

It was penned by Samuel Williams, 35, from Kent, and beat other topical jokes about Donald Trump, Jeremy Corbyn and the Brexit negotiations.

The entries were submitted via Twitter and shortlisted by a panel of judges led by comedy critic Bruce Dessau before being put to a public vote of 2,000 Brits.
