Published at 6:44am 14th March 2019.

Facebook has gone down for eight hours in what is thought to be the worst outage in its history.

Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger also had problems from around 3pm on Wednesday.

Bosses say it is a "partial outage", affecting users in the east and west coasts of the US and Europe.

Many could not post, send pictures or in some cases log on at all, on either desktop or mobiles.

We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

— Facebook (@facebook) March 13, 2019

Posting on its developer site, Facebook said it was investigating and trying to get the problem fixed:

"We are currently experiencing issues that may cause some API requests to take longer or fail unexpectedly.

"We are investigating the issue and working on a resolution".

We're focused on working to resolve the issue as soon as possible, but can confirm that the issue is not related to a DDoS attack.

— Facebook (@facebook) March 13, 2019

It also TWEETED to explain a bit about what was going on, confirming that the issue is "not related to a DDoS attack", or cyber attack.

The problems sparked a flurry of comments and amusing memes on Twitter...

Some users even likened what was happening to the apocalypse!

Anybody go sign up for MySpace while Instagram & Facebook we’re down? #Apocalypse

Some of the problems seems to have been resolved but there is still no official word on what caused it.
