Remember, Remember: 10 Days of Torture

York Dungeon Guy Fawkes 2019

SHARE THIS STORY:

Published at 3:23pm 4th November 2019.

Tuesday 5th November marks 414 years since Guy Fawkes was caught under the houses of parliament with 36 barrels of gunpowder.

He and his co-conspirators were plotting to destroy King James I and the protestant ruling class.

Following this, James’ daughter Elizabeth would be installed as a Catholic head of state, ushering in an age of dominant Catholicism.

However, Fawkes was captured and imprisoned, during which time he was subjected to a variety of tortures in the Tower of London.

On 31st January 1606, he was hanged, drawn and quartered; a brutal sentence which was gauged against the severity of his crime.

Black Plaques are the dark counterpart to the famous blue ones; whereas the latter celebrates life, the former commemorates death.

The York Dungeon has chosen Guy Fawkes to be the subject of the debut plaque, due to his infamy and locality.

Placed in the restaurant of the Petergate pub, the new addition to the décor has been installed due to the location’s significance, as it is said to be his birthplace.

However, the building is Georgian, whereas Fawkes was born in 1570, over 50 years earlier.

There is a white cottage at the back on the pub; that is where he was born.

Professor Jim Sharpe (pictured with Guy Fawkes and York Town Crier Minster FM's Ben Fry) is a leading Fawkes expert – believes that..

“Guy Fawkes is an incredibly divisive figure; here to some, villain to others.

Whatever your view is, it cannot be doubted that he was a brave man who died for his ideals.

He has become part of our national history”

For a limited time in November, the York Dungeon will be running 10 Days of Torture; an experience inspired by Fawkes. Guest will discover some gruesome details and grim facts about the time York’s most notorious son spent in the tower of London.

“This is a unique story with some really gory twists”

said Rachael Garwood, Performance Manager at the York Dungeon.

“We have a wonderful Guy Fawkes show, so it’s great to be able to expand upon this proper Yorkshire rogue”

10 Days of Torture runs 5th-14th November.
