Welcome to Yorkshire Chief Executive Sir Gary Verity DL presented Yorkshire-based racehorse trainer Mark Johnston with a special commemorative plaque and a Betty’s hamper on Wednesday to honour his achievement of beating the all-time record for British winners.
That historic milestone was achieved as Poet’s Society ridden by Frankie Dettori raced to victory in the 3.00 Clipper Logistics Stakes at the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival in York on Thursday taking Johnston’s tally of British winners above the mark of 4,193 set by the retired Richard Hannon Sr.
Scottish-born Johnston is based in Middleham and trained his first winner in 1987.
Sir Gary Verity DL, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said:
“We’re absolutely thrilled for Mark, his wife Deirdre, and all the team at Kingsley House. To realise this record-breaking feat is a true testament to Mark’s meticulous approach over three decades of racing.
The fact he achieved it on home soil at the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival makes it even more special. Yorkshire has a rich heritage of horse racing dating all the way back to the time of Richard III, and what Mark has achieved today is the very latest in a long line of successes.
We’re proud that Mark chooses to base his stables in Middleham and that our county continues to host so many of the world’s best trainers.
We’re looking forward to seeing Mark achieve many more victories in the future and his constant pursuit of excellence is an inspiration to use all.”
On Thursday Welcome to Yorkshire also announced the signing of a new deal which will see them continue as headline sponsors of the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival for a further three years.
