The VX World Cup is coming home to York!
After the last two World Cups being in Italy and India, York is to host the 2019 VX Games in the next few weeks
VX is a fast, exciting, Yorkshire-born sport that was launched in 2006.
A true innovation in sport it is not a derivative of any other sport.
In its short life it has become increasingly international as it has spread to more and more countries.
Played as a team game (VX) in a sports hall or as singles (V2) in squash courts it has a team world cup every four years and a singles world cup every year.
2019 is one of the years when both World Cups happen and, to mark that event, Global VX chose to hold the World Cup back home in York, near where the sport was born.
The VX team event will be held at the University of York on Thursday August 22nd, and will be followed by the singles (V2) event which will be hosted by the David Lloyd Centre from Friday August 23rd through until Sunday August 25th.
Excitement is building in the local VX Community as the event draws near.
The excitement has proved to be contagious as David Lloyd have really bought into the event and put together a great package of support for players, officials and spectators.
Additional local interest is provided as reigning World Champion Tom Hildreth is a David Lloyd Personal Trainer so will be defending his title on home territory and can count on a lot of local support!
Last year VX India really raised the bar when they hosted the V2 World Cup and this year VX England have taken up the challenge.
This year’s event looks like being the biggest to date with some very exciting competition to look forward to.
New sport history is being made regularly and records tumble as players keep pushing the boundaries and raising the standard of the sport ever higher and in this year’s event several players are looking to make history.
Tom Hildreth and Scott Snowdon are each bidding to become the first player to win the title four times; Oliver Stocks who, as reigning Youth National, European and World Champion, is keen to retain his title but will again face India’s impressive Parminder Singh who came so close to beating Oliver in the final last year; Dan Raper is aiming to the be the first person to win at both Youth and Senior levels; Hasindihe James is keen to be the first non-UK World Champion.
The Masters title will definitely have a new name on the trophy as the unbeaten champion Paul Hildreth retired from competitive V2 after winning last year’s trophy in India – this makes for a very close battle as any one of 7 or 8 could win it on the day!
Carl Alsop of VX England (and the sport’s first World Champion) who is part of the organising committee said:
“We are very grateful to the team at David Lloyd.
They’ve really got behind us and we are delighted with what they have put together for everyone from players to spectators.
This looks like being a very exciting event and we would love to see lots of people coming to see some of our top players in action and see the superb set up at David Lloyd.”
