The region’s water company is on the lookout for water efficient gardens and gardeners.
With hot weather for most of the national lockdown period, people have been exercising their green fingers even more than usual – with Google seeing searches relating to gardens increase by more than 40% year-on-year.
Now, Yorkshire Water is looking for garden transformations that have considered water saving as part of their rejuvenation.
The company is asking for entries to its latest competition via Instagram and Facebook, to be in with the chance of winning a water saving gardening hamper and a £100 Yorkshire Gift Card.
The Yorkshire Gift Card is designed to give the Yorkshire economy a boost, by encouraging people to spend money within the county. Welcome to Yorkshire hope to launch to the public later this month.
Businesses already signed up to accept the card include Tong Garden Centre, Castle Howard, Burton Constable Hall & Grounds and Sheffield Theatres.
To encourage gardeners who may not have considered their use of water, Yorkshire Water’s has supplied some top tips on using water wisely:
Timing is everything
A really easy way to get the most out of watering your plants is to water your flower beds in the early morning or late evening. This will mean more water is absorbed by your thirsty plants as less is lost through evaporation.
Add layers!
You can help keep you flower beds moist by adding a layer of leaves, bark or compost to your flower beds which will also help retain moisture and reduce the need for watering.
Choose your plants wisely
Try adding some drought-resistant plants to your garden such as Lavender. It looks great and doesn’t need a lot of water so you can save water and time.
Pool your resources
We’re used to lots rain in Yorkshire installing a water butt (or making your own with an empty milk carton) is a great way to make the most out of those downpours. You can collect it and store it ready to use on your garden when we’re having a dry spell.
Save it for another day
Keep your paddling pool water fresh for longer by placing a fitted sheet over it when it’s not in use to stop bugs getting in. Once you’ve had enough splashing around all that lovely water can then be used to water the garden!
Of the competition, director of water service delivery, Neil Dewis, said:
“There are lots of ways to enjoy houseplants and gardening whilst saving water. For example, simple things such as collecting rainwater in a water butt can provide you with enough water to feed all of your indoor plants.
Having a water conscious garden is a fantastic way to reduce the amount of water your household uses – we can’t wait to see what the green fingered folk of Yorkshire have been up to during lockdown!”
