Local councillors Sheena Jackson and Stephen Fenton got an insight into the world of visually-impaired sport at an ‘inclusive tennis’ event held at Energise on Saturday.
The event, which was organised by City of York Council, sought to raise awareness of visually impaired tennis and the opportunities there are to play inclusive tennis in York.
There was also an opportunity for people to wear special goggles to get a better understanding of visually-impaired tennis. Sheena Jackson (Lib Dem, Westfield ward) and Stephen Fenton (Lib Dem, Dringhouses & Woodthorpe ward), who are both keen tennis players at their local club, donned the goggles for a game of visually-impaired tennis.
Sheena commented:
“Wearing the goggles gave us a real appreciation of the skills that visually-impaired tennis players have.
It’s great that this event has helped to showcase the opportunities available locally for inclusive sport.”
The funds raised from Saturday’s event will go towards the regional visually impaired tennis tournament to be held in York at David Lloyd on 8 and 9 April.
Further information about inclusive sport is York is available on the council website
