Cresswell vows to do things his way

30th October 2015

Richard Cresswell takes charge of his first game in management this Saturday as York City visit Crawley for a Sky Bet League 2 fixture. Travelling to Wigginton Road Training Ground on Thursday morning I was expecting to see signs of Cresswell's nerves. I was surprised to be speaking to a man who didn't look a have a worry in the world.

The 38 year old caretaker boss of City has no previous experience of management and little experience as a coach after finishing his playing career just 2 years ago. It can't be said that Cresswell seems overawed by the pressures that come with management though, he told me "I'm going to do it my way."

Cresswell started and ended his playing career at York City and the club is certainly in his heart "I've been here a long time I know the club inside out" he said "it's been a very proud moment even if it's just for a week or 2 weeks I'm going to enjoy it." Cresswell was keeping his cards close to his chest though regarding his ambition to take the City job full time "I've honestly not thought about that" he claimed.

While he has little experience in coaching he has played under the likes of David Moyes and Tony Pulis, contacts that will be extremely helpful to him. It's impossible to know if the City board would entrust a man with no prior experience to lead their club but Cresswell seems ready for the challenge. His first taste of management has wet his appetite; "My phones not stopped ringing for the last 72 hours but I've enjoyed every minute." Cresswell joked, "Once you step into it I think you learn a little bit about yourself whether you want to go into it and I've enjoyed it."

Cresswell takes charge of a team low on confidence, City have gone almost 2 months without a league win now leaving them worryingly close to the relegation zone. Cresswell was keen to emphasise the positive signs he's seen in his first week taking training "It's been very upbeat" he said "it's my job and my staffs job to lift them (the players) and it's been really bright."

The City board have invited applicants for the vacant managers position at Bootham Crescent. Cresswell certainly has a great opportunity to make a case for himself this Saturday and it was clear he can't wait for kick off. "We are looking forward to it, the players want the result as much as anyone at the club" He explained. Cresswell also took the chance to address the fans who protested for much of Russ Wilcox's reign at the club, "What we need from the fans is to get behind the players."

City sack Wilcox

26th October 2015

Russ Wilcox has parted company with York City after taking charge of the club for just over a year. The club is now in the hands of former player Richard Cresswell while the search for a new manager takes place.

The news of Wilcox's departure comes after City have gone 9 Sky Bet League 2 games without picking up a win. The last few weeks have been hugely disappointing for Wilcox he told me on the 15th of October how important the run of games against Barnet, Dagenham and Redbridge and Wimbledon were "it is an important period, what we did so well last season was beat the teams around us and we need to do that." Wilcox's side managed to pick up just one point over this spell of games though, ultimately form that lost Wilcox his job.

There will be few if any City fans who read the news on Monday morning without a smile. Much of the City support have wanted Wilcox out for most of the season. In recent weeks though animosity aimed towards their manager has grown massively. During Saturday's defeat against Wimbledon the final period of the game was overshadowed by calls for Wilcox to leave from large sections of Bootham Crescent.

York City Chairman, Jason McGill said, "The Board of Directors would like to thank Russ for his hard work, commitment and endeavour during his time as York City manager."

"He has been a pleasure to work with and is an honourable, decent individual who has given his all to his role at the Club."

"The Board would also like to thank John Schofield for his hard work and enthusiasm on the training ground. Like Russ, he has also shown a high level of commitment to the Club during his time here."

Clearly McGill has not taken the decision lightly to part company with Wilcox. The board gave him as much time as they could, with the growing unrest amongst the support, though it seems it was his only option.

City have now invited applications for the managers role having seemingly made no approaches to potential candidates until now. The early favourites to take charge on a permanent basis are Richard Cresswell, Nigel Clough and Mark Cooper. Even Tim Sherwood can be found at 25/1.

Wilcox still the man

20th October 2015

Wilcox insists he's still the right man for York

The scrutiny intensified on the under fire York City manager Russ Wilcox on Saturday as he saw his side go down 3-1 against fellow strugglers Barnet. With a midweek visit of Dagenham and Redbridge looming, surely nothing less than a win will do for the Minstermen.

City have won just 2 league games all season, form which has led an increasing amount of fans calling for Wilcox to be replaced. On Saturday the chants aimed at Wilcox from his teams travelling fans grew fiercer. Despite that the City manager arrived at training with a brave face on Monday morning, he certainly didn't seem a man who was ready to throw in the towel. He claimed he's confident that he is still 'without a doubt' the right man to take York City forward.

"We're not where we want to be. I'm not hiding away from that fact there's not enough points on the board, there's not enough wins on the board but we've been unlucky in a lot of games and big decisions haven't gone our way." He said "You make your own luck so we'll keep fighting, scrapping, working hard to turn it around."

Wilcox did admit that his sides result against Barnet was the hardest defeat of the season to take. When City drew level 10 minutes from time it seemed Michael Coulson had rescued his manager from further agony but York's defensive errors led to a defeat that leaves Wilcox on the edge.

"To throw it away with cheap goals was hard to take" said the City boss, "it was down to doing the basics right. We conceded two goals from their goal kicks which shouldn't happen. We've had a meeting yesterday to put a few things to bed."

To add to Wilcox's misery his captain Russell Penn has been sidelined with an injury he suffered on Saturday. While the injury isn't expected to keep Penn out for a long period, Wilcox did accept he is unlikely to play any part on Tuesday night.

"He's sore at the moment, very swollen so that's another blow" Wilcox revealed, "You don't need that when you're in the situation that were in at the moment."

Wilcox was though keeping his cards close to his chest with regards to how he will set his team up for the crucial clash with Dagenham and Redbridge. He is expected to make changes for the midweek game after the  majority of the City players were under par on Saturday.

"We're going to look at the lads again today (Monday) and pick a team from there. See who's ready, who's fit and available" He explained.

Dagenham and Redbridge will certainly be low on confidence themselves, they have been trapped in the relegation zone for the majority of the season.

Wilcox said "It's against a team down the bottom end, the pressures on us, we're at home but we should embrace the pressure, go out there and perform, give it our best shot and hopefully pick up a win."

This is a must win game for York and even if they do emerge victorious against Dagenham Wilcox will have a lot left to do if he is to win back support from the fans. It's set to be a significant night at Bootham Crescent.

Minstermen eye winning run

16th October 2015

York City travel to Barnet this weekend to take on a side who have lost their last 3 league matches. York themselves are without a league win since early September and badly need a victory on Saturday.

York go into this weekend's match on the back of a positive performance at Luton Town. The Minstermen came away with a draw, a result that before the game York surely would have been pleased with. However, Wilcox claims he is 'disappointed' his team didn't come away with all 3 points. The City boss was left frustrated by the officials, "a couple of big decisions didn't go our way" he said.

York have had some challenging fixtures of late against Notts County, Oxford United and Luton Town. Now though they look forward to a run of games against teams who are either below or around them in the league table. It's a period of games that Wilcox is targeting to get his teams season back on track "It is an important period" he said, "What we did so well last season was beat the teams around us and that's what we need to do."

York have just 2 league wins so far this season, form that has seen the manager receive criticism. Wilcox is looking at the weekends game as a chance to start putting their poor start right, "We've got to make sure we're brave with the football and play our game and if we perform like we can then it's a great chance for us to get 3 points."

York were able to play an unchanged team against Luton and it is possible that the same team could play again this Saturday. The City manager says he is "just waiting on one or two with little knocks from last weekend but it's good to get consistency."

York City have had some good news this week, the club have managed to keep hold of 20 year-old forward Rhys Turner beyond the one month loan that was initially agreed with Oldham Athletic. The deal is one that has pleased Wilcox "He's showed a different side to his game that we probably haven't got, so we're pleased he's staying."

York's performances have certainly improved of late, yet they have failed to turn those good performances into results. If Wilcox is to win back frustrated supporters that will have to change over the coming weeks.
