Attacking duo to fire York to safety?

18th December 2015

The Minstermen have not won a league game since September 5th, a 3-0 away win over Newport. Since then though the two clubs have switched positions its York who now find themselves at the foot of League 2 despite boasting the potentially dangerous attacking partnership of Oliver and Coulson.

After City separated with former boss Russ Wilcox they would have been hoping for new man Jackie McNamara to have a similar impact as the one John Sheridon has had since taking charge at Newport, sadly that hasn't been the case. McNamara has in fact overseen 7 defeats in his first 7 matches at York. While City have won just 2 league games all season they have been scoring more goals than the teams around them (23). Fellow strugglers Yeovil and Dagenham have managed 21 goals this campaign and Hartlepool have put the ball in the net just 19 times. As McNamara is well aware City's problem is at the other end of the pitch, he has claimed the goals his team have conceded are easily avoidable. If he can find a formula to make York harder to break down York's attacking players can fire them to safety.

City did see a drastic improvement in last weekends match against Bristol Rovers. The Minstermen went into the last 20 minutes of the match with a one goal lead, the points again slipped away though after conceding two late goals. Losing has seemingly become a bad habit for City's players, they have forgotten how to close out games on the rare occasion that they do have a lead, a problem which is largely down to confidence.

There are still positives at the moment, despite the awful run of form York have had they are somehow just one point adrift from safety. On paper there are certainly weaker teams than York in the division Dagenham and Redbridge as well as Yeovil are sides that York will believe they are superior to. With experienced players returning to the team at the moment as well some talented youngsters they have a squad who are capable of replicating the great escape that the club made in the second half of last season.

York's attacking options are their main reason to be optimistic about the rest of the season. Summer signing Vadaine Oliver has scored 9 goals in all competitions this season. The 24 year old is a handful, no defenders in league 2 will look forward to playing against him. Michael Coulson has also enjoyed some brilliant form since he returned from injury and has 5 goals himself in12 appearances. With the added youthful pace of loanees Fewster and McEvoy York will definitely score enough goals to give them a fighting chance of survival provided the leaky defence improves.

The return of talented midfielder Luke Summerfield is another plus for York. Summerfield hasn't featured for York since a severe head injury sustained against Notts County, his absence has been a huge factor in York's dismal form. The 27 year old adds some much needed experience to what has been a youthful midfield of late. His return against Bristol Rovers made York more organised and throughout the remainder of the season he has the ability to create goal scoring opportunities from set pieces as well as open play.

With 25 games left to play it's definitely not time for York to panic yet. Jackie McNamara will count himself lucky that his team haven't been cut adrift at the bottom with a dismal total of 12 points, Yeovil and Dagenham and Redbridge remain in striking distance.
