Conor Townsend a January target for York?

York City manager Jackie McNamara has confirmed he wants 2-3 new players in the January transfer market. Reinforcement is most obviously required at the back, throughout the season he has made no secret of his desire to bring in a new right back. Following the loan deal of Jordan Lussey not working out a full back signing in January is almost inevitable.

The right back area is one that has been a problem area even prior to McNamara's arrival Marvin McCoy, Eddie Nolan, Stefan O'Conner as well as Ben Godfrey have all been used on the right of the defence but a long term solution must be a priority for York. Conor Townsend, Hull City full back who is currently on loan at Grimsby Town is one potential solution to City's problem area. Townsend, 22, played under McNamara at Dundee United and Mariners boss Paul Hurst has stated the defender is attracting interest from football league clubs.

Townsend, who has become a fan favourite amongst the Grimsby support in his short time there, is set to head back to Hull City on January 9th but his contract with the East Yorkshire club is up at the end of the season and he could be set to leave the Tigers this month. After eye catching performances for Grimsby this campaign he is attracting attention from football league clubs but McNamara may just have the best chance of attracting him having worked with him in Scotland.

Townsend made 17 appearances for McNamara's Dundee United and the youngster certainly made a good impression. McNamara was keen to make Townsend's stay at Tannadice permanent but wasn't successful. Now at York City McNamara may have a better chance of capturing the talented defender whose services are much needed at Bootham Crescent.
