Grand Opera House York

About Them

The Grand Opera House York is the premier receiving house in the city: we bring the West End and the best touring shows to the audiences of York, North Yorkshire and beyond.

On paper, we're made up of Ticketing and Sales, Marketing, Technical, Customer Experience and Management teams. In reality, this translates to roughly 80 theatre professionals on hand across the building to give our clients, companies and customers a great experience.

As we strive to host a variety of theatre along with events and city-wide festivals, we seek to strike the balance between being friendly and being great at what we do.

Why Should They Win?

We may not be the biggest; we aim to be the best. We are dedicated to giving our audience quality choice. This year has seen our diary expand to include the newest touring productions (Edmond de Bergerac, Little Miss Sunshine and national treasure Sir Ian McKellen) along with securing classics to return to our city (Blood Brothers, Joseph, Rocky Horror).

We've worked hard to grow our significance within the community, supporting local societies, taking part in city festivals (Residents Weekend, proudly hosting York Fashion Week's first accessible Fashion Show and developing our Great Yorkshire Fringe offer to four headline events). Together with our audiences and visiting companies, we've raised over £12,000 for local charities in just twelve months.

We've increased the number of accessible performances across the year, including during Pantomime season. We take our responsibility as a local employer seriously, increasing our training offering to heighten the team's career potential.

Our social following has tripled as we engage directly with our customers, treating them to more behind-the-scenes glimpses. Freshly featured in the latest Great Britain Lonely Planet edition (Summer 2019), we'd be proud to trade in our Silver for a Gold Minster FM Listener Choice Award - thank you!

Energi Trampoline Park York

About Them

It's been over 3 years since 2 local York lads opened the doors to Energi Trampoline Park, a 24,000 sqm2 indoor leisure facility based on York Business Park, Poppleton.

Energi Trampoline Park offers 100 interconnected trampolines as well as a Dodgeball Area, Foam Pit, Air Bag, Assault Course and a 5*Cafe located on a mezzanine floor providing the perfect vantage point.

During this time, we have developed and maintained a 60+ work force ranging from Full Time & Part Time Positions. We have also attracted a varied and diverse customer base covering a wide range of demographics from 2 years of age all the way to individuals in their 80's.

Our main focus is families and providing them with a safe, clean and enjoyable experience that they can all revel in.

Why Should They Win?

In short there's NO YOU in this category. We the Energi Family deserve to be shortlisted because without that ethos/mind set there would be no Energi Trampoline Park.

Energi Trampoline Park was a labour of love from 2 local lads from York and everyone who signed up for this rollercoaster of a journey. So to be shortlisted is a Huge Thank You to them and their efforts.

This is the only venue in York that you can visit where the whole family from 2yrs upwards can literally bounce off the walls with a huge smile on all their faces, whilst at the same time without realising doing some very important exercise.

In just over 3 years we have successfully created a Family Friendly Experience in York from the ground up with very little help from the outside but copious amounts of blood, sweat and tears!!

Everyman Cinema

About Them

Everyman is the next evolution of cinema - Swap your soft drink for a glass of red wine and a freshly made pizza, both served to your seat!

We create a warm and friendly atmosphere within our screens, offering plush sofas, side tables and cushions for each guest. With a wide array of mainstream, independent and classic films, special events, launches and a diverse calendar of live satellite broadcasts, there is something for everyone with us!

Why Should They Win?

We strive to give each customer the best experience possible, serving food and beverages straight to the seats and offering tablet service within the screens so our guests feel weighted on hand-and-foot.

Our team are constantly brushing-up on their knowledge of our products to help recommend the right thing for you, whether it be just a glass of wine and an Espresso Martini for the screen or a family feast in our adjoining Spielburger restaurant.

York Theatre Royal

About Them

Regional theatre offering a year-round programme of in-house productions and top quality touring shows in both the Main House and the Studio. Currently celebrating its 275th birthday.

Why Should They Win?

In its 275th birthday year York Theatre Royal is firmly established as the premium arts hub in the city through its rich and diverse programme of creative activity. The theatre serves audiences of all ages with high quality and ambitious productions of new commissions, revivals and a pantomime of international renown. 

Off-stage the theatre has one of the largest and most active Youth Theatres in the country, part of a thriving Creative Engagement programme involving the community.

Selby Superbowl

About Them

We are a family run original ten pin bowling alley, no string bowling, with an indoor lazer arena and kub karting for the little ones age 4-9, we have a fully established bar and kitchen, amazing place for parties, free parking.

Why Should They Win?

We have run this business for the past 18 months, and in that time we have given Selby Superbowl an overhaul, we offer very reasonable parties from kids parties up to and including retirement parties, we do our utmost to support charity events in any way we can, giving vouchers or holding the event here at the venue, we hold the Leeds laughter lounge here on a 4 monthly basis where all the proceeds go to Parkinson's UK, we have other charity events organised, we have a very friendly team who know how to make a party successful. 

We also offer school holiday discounts throughout the year!

York Barbican

About Them

York Barbican is York's premier music venue, hosting some of the biggest touring acts in the world including Russell Brand, The Specials, Paul Weller and many more. 

Since the venue opened, York Barbican has staged hundreds of world-class artists for nearly thirty years and continues to be at the forefront of the city's live music scene.

In 2019, York Barbican has been voted in the Top 20 Music Venues in Europe by Pollstar, and will once again host the prestigious Triple Crown event, The Betway UK Snooker Championships, comedy superstar Ricky Gervais & Manic Street Preachers in a year-long programme featuring over 200 amazing shows.

We believe we deserve to win as we feel that York Barbican brings the wow-factor to the city, giving local residents the chance to see some of the world's biggest stars up close right on their doorstep.

The venue hosts a huge inclusive programme that everyone can enjoy, from energetic dance performances, side-splitting comedy and some real rocking gigs!

The Joseph Rowntree Theatre Ltd Charity

About Them

York's Art Deco treasure of a theatre run by the community for the community. 

Completely volunteer run our charity is a theatre and social hub offering affordable entertainment and performance opportunities to the people of York and surrounding areas.  Performances feature plays, panto, comedies, musicals, concerts, live music, dance, opera and light opera as well as an annual Choir Festival offering community choirs the opportunity to perform together on a big stage. 

Over 35 groups regularly use the theatre for their shows, including groups from the two York Universities.

There is always a friendly welcome from our volunteers who help guide audience members to their seats and a lively backstage crew making sure that any show operates as it should. 

It is also a great place to volunteer and be part of a vibrant community hub.

Why Should They Win?

The charity offers people affordable entertainment in comfortable seating with plenty of leg room and a clear view of the stage, wherever you sit. 

It enables people of all ages from 2 to 92 to perform and follow their interests.  From tiny tots in dance school shows through youth theatre groups in musicals like "Bugsy Malone" & "Joseph" to full scale adult musicals such as "Anything Goes", "Kiss Me, Kate" and "Oliver!" 

We also offer touring acts such as "The Tina Turner Experience" tribute show, which recently wowed the audience and had them on their feet throughout.

The annual choir festival offers 6 or more concerts each featuring 4 different local community choirs and is loved by those taking part as well as the audiences that attend.

There are over 150 volunteers that help to make this theatre a truly community based offering that is affordable for most people. 

Ticket prices for quality shows range from only £10 to £20 for adults; compare that to the commercial theatre ticket prices! Also when booking tickets there are no booking fees or other add-ons.
