St Leonard's Hospice Charity Shop (Layerthorpe)
About Them
St Leonard's Hospice is an independent charity, providing specialist palliative care and support for local people with life limiting illnesses. The Hospice is made up of an In-patient Unit, Sunflower Centre and Hospice@Home service. Every patient is recognised and treated as an individual, and as a result are able to enjoy the best possible quality of life. Care also extends to support families and carers.
St Leonard's care is free of charge to patients and their families but not free to provide. As a charity they rely heavily on the generosity of the public to raise over £5.8 million each year that it takes to run St Leonard's Hospice. The 13 St Leonard's charity shops help raise over half a million every year which is absolutely crucial in funding patient care at the Hospice.
The St Leonard's Hospice charity shop in Layerthorpe, just outside York City Centre, opened on 15th August 2018 and, as well as raising vital funds for St Leonard's, has been a significant part of the community ever since. The shop couldn't run without the loyal support of 10 active volunteers.
Why Should They Win?
The St Leonard's Hospice charity shops raise over half a million pounds towards patient care every year, and are vital to the running of the Hospice.
Our retail team worked tirelessly to create something unique and different to our usual style when fitting out the Layerthorpe shop and it is something we are very proud of. Nearly all fittings were constructed by hand using second-hand furniture and donated goods, for example the shop counter is made from parts of old chests of drawers. All of the units are moveable and multipurpose and were designed for us by our retail facilities co-ordinator, Dom, who did a great job. He built most of the fixtures from OSB board and steel which was then decorated with spray paint, emulating the Hospice branding and giving an almost industrial feel.
This environmentally conscious attitude taken when fitting out the shop extends to other areas too. Not only do our shops sell items that may otherwise go to landfill, we also recycle unsellable clothing, cables and more.
The shop holds events such as the wedding pop-up, which raised £1,600 for St Leonard's and helped customers make their special day even more special, whatever their budget.
Krusties
About Them
Krusties is located on Patrick Pool just next to the Shambles Market. It's been there offering great quality sandwiches for 26 years. The shop had few owners and I am proud being one of the list. If you are from York you must know Krusties!
The shop is opened from Monday to Friday and offers breakfast and lunch to all business owners, professionals, solicitors, contractors and workers in the area. It's not well known to tourists but we consider it a hidden gem for our locals. We have no printed leaflets, no posters on the walls, no TV or music for the athmosphere, no trendy furniture and posh seats. Our only promoting way is the the old style: the word of mouth. Our sandwiches may easily compete with big brands but we prefer to keep it local.
Massive sandwiches on rolls or baguettes freshly made every day, jacket potatoes, rice and pasta filled with our special sauces, salad bar, just have a go! The prices are the most affordable within the city centre.
Our suppliers are all from Yorkshire area from baking potatoes to eggs and bread which is made and delivered every morning by Fred's Home Bakery.
Why Should They Win?
Would be a coronation of 26 years of activity. This is the case when I feel like I didn't take over the business but the business took over me. I am honoured to continue to deliver a great service and good quality food to people that use to come to Krusties since they were just a child, to people that prefer to queue and wait few minutes in exchange of our tasty Royals or jackets, to people that just heard about us from a friend or a friend of a friend. Krusties is part of York and Krusties has York in its heart.
